Ever heard of a unique component of cinnamon called trans-cinnamaldehyde? It’s a heavy word, but it matters a lot! This part produces the good tasting, smelling agent in cinnamon. It is also very useful in many ways to keep us healthy. The wonderful thing about cinnamon is that it’s not just this spice we put into our meals to make them taste better, it also helps us out too.
Trans-cinnamaldehyde has been found by scientists to help repel pathogens that make us sick. That means it can assist our bodies in remaining robust and healthy while also warding off colds and other sicknesses. That’s why people have been using cinnamon and other spices in traditional medicine for thousands of years. These spices do more than add flavor, they are little helpers for our health!
As we mentioned earlier, trans-cinnamaldehyde is constituent of cinnamon. It provides similar flavor and aroma that we all know, love and associate with cinnamon. But did you know it’s not only in cinnamon? Trans-cinnamaldehyde is also found in other spices such as cardamom and nutmeg. You see, these spices do not only taste good, they help us to stay healthy as well. Spicing things up with these makes their way into our meals in a delicious attempt to bring health in the body!
Only very long time ago, Cinnamons were used! The ancient Egyptians used it to make things smell better when they prepared bodies for burials — a long time ago. The Greeks and Romans were also fond of using it in cooking and medicine. They thought spices such as cinnamon were magical!
In the Middle Ages, there was a great value and scarcity placed on cinnamon. It was traded from Asia to Europe on long routes called the Spice Route. It was extremely rare, therefore very expensive, affordable only by a small circle. Cinnamon is plentiful and inexpensive where we shop today. Even when it is much cheaper now, it is still a popular spice that adds value to our health.
Trans-cinnamaldehyde is soureresistant so it helps our bodies combat germs and stay fit and that is pretty much important. It can also support our immune system, which fights sickness and helps us bounce back when we do get sick. In one experiment, researchers found that trans-cinnamaldehyde stimulated mice to produce more white blood cells. They are important because they help our bodies to remain strong and block infections!
Researchers are also exploring whether trans-cinnamaldehyde might be useful in treating cancer. They discovered it could prevent cancer cells from budding in mice. That’s really exciting and has given us hope, but we need more information to find out if it works for humans too. Alex just wants more research into how spices and certain foods can make us healthier.
